What is Apache Lucene/Solr?

Lucene and Solr are state-of-the-art search technologies available for free as open source from The Apache Software Foundation, the public-domain open source web server. Lucene is a Java-based search library while Solr is a layer of code on top of Lucene that transforms Lucene into a search platform for building search applications.
