Semantic - understands more than the words in the content, it understands them in context.  Requires a Knowledge Organizing System like an otology to model the domain specific language; classification of content to enrich words with multiple metadata values , both entities like people and places and subjects sourced from the ontology; a map of the relationships between topics that can be used for indexing and for retrieval.
