A Recap of Enterprise Search Europe & A Look Ahead to Taxonomy Boot Camp and SharePoint Symposium

A Recap of Enterprise Search Europe, London 2011

Enterprise Search Europe 2011 just got over this week. While Enterprise Search Summit in the US has been going on for more than a decade, this was the first one of its kind in Europe and attracted a lot of attention.  There were many talks that pretty much all focused on the basics of search and how it has evolved over years.  What caught my attention was a presentation by Alan Pelz-Sharpe, Principal Analyst and Director of Real Story Group who boiled it down to how users complain about search:  “users say they can’t find something” not “we are going to search for something”.  How true?  It all goes back to findability.  Search allows you to find things, but as we all know, search does not always give you back the right results.  For that, one should really be doing a metadata query and not a free text query.  So I am back to talking about metadata – again! By tagging documents with high quality metadata, one can seriously improve the results. That brings me back full circle to Alan’s presentation “searching against relevant documents only”. That can only be done with metadata.  I rest my case!

A Look Ahead to Taxonomy Boot Camp & SharePoint Summit, 2011

If you are in the Washington DC area, make sure you stop by and meet with us at the Taxonomy Boot Camp and SharePoint Symposium (Booth #8) at the Marriott Wardman.  It promises to be very interesting.  Jeremy Bentley is going to be presenting the Luncheon Keynote on Monday.  His talk will focus on Content Intelligence Solutions and their impact on search and other information management systems.   In addition, Jeremy is also going to be part of a panel at the Enterprise Search Summit discussing “Scaling and Managing Search for Large Enterprises”.
