CMIS compliant integration

Semaphore for CMIS-Compatible Content Management Systems

Semaphore connects to any Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) compliant content management system, so you can quickly begin creating and using consistent metadata for records management, compliance, e-discovery, search and other business applications.

The Semaphore CMIS toolkit can be used to implement auto-classification in CMIS compliant content management systems by assisted classification and entity extraction when a document is uploaded or on the content corpus. Our solution integrates with most content management systems such as, SharePoint, Documentum, OpenText and FileNet.

The advantages of metadata

Semaphore auto-classifies content using a taxonomy, ontology or controlled vocabulary that identifies and models the concepts, topics, products, market segments, organizational structures – and more – that are uniquely important to your organization. In addition Semaphore can identify and extract entities associated with the content. Each content asset is analyzed and tagged with metadata describing the concepts that Semaphore identifies in it. Content management systems use that metadata to create better content flows, apply governance policies to content, improve operational and regulatory business processes through automated workflows, and drive quality search results.

The Semaphore CMIS Connector helps systems integrators and internal IT staff to easily embed Semaphore’s capabilities into client specific workflows and requirements – so they quickly can begin creating and using consistent metadata for records management, compliance, e-discovery, search and other business applications. The Semaphore CMIS toolkit can be used to implement auto-classification in CMIS compliant content management systems in two ways:

  • Assisted classification and entity extraction during document upload
  • Automated classification and entity extraction of the content corpus

CMIS-compatible Content Management Systems

Most leading content management systems support CMIS - an open standard developed by AIIM and administered by OASIS. CMIS defines a core set of services used to access the capabilities provided by content management systems so that applications like Semaphore can interact, and be integrated with them in a consistent and standard way. CMIS defines the services, protocols and capabilities and Semaphore’s CMIS Connector provides a toolkit of code and widgets that are called at the appropriate point in the business process workflow to take advantage of Semaphore’s content enrichment capabilities. In this way Semaphore supports the specific workflows and needs of each client organization with minimal integration effort.

Semaphore’s CMIS connector brings the power of Semaphore’s model-assisted classification and entity extraction to CMIS compliant content management systems - without lengthy and costly custom integration.

Smartlogic’s CMIS toolkit can be used with any CMIS-compliant system. Prominent examples include:

  • Alfresco
  • EMC Documentum
  • HP Interwoven
  • IBM Filenet / Content Manager
  • OpenText

Document upload mode

The document upload option involves two widgets that are inserted into the content management system workflow to let users take advantage of the assisted classification and text analysis capabilities of Semaphore on upload. Users can also review and edit classification, if needed. Once the review and edit process is complete, the user returns to the normal content management system workflow and the content asset, enriched with additional metadata, is loaded to the repository.

The Semaphore UI widget is provided as a skinnable and customizable jQuery component that the client or system integrator can tailor to their needs, site image and branding. These easy-to-install components turn a traditional file upload into a metadata-generating file upload.

Batch mode

With a batch integration, users can classify multiple documents at once. For this batch classification, Semaphore makes full use of the CMIS standard to fetch documents from a cabinet, folder or library; assess the documents in it; attach metadata to them; and save them back.

Semaphore’s batch classification capability populates the existing properties of the document with the output of the Semaphore Classification Server for the fields specified in the configuration. The Semaphore CMIS client supports the following options:

  • Restricting the batch classification to a specific repository, library or folder
  • Restricting the batch classification to documents for which a specific property is blank
  • Restricting the batch classification to documents that have been created since a specific date and time
  • Restricting the batch classification to documents that have been modified since a specific date and time

Smartlogic and its network of partners can provide the expertise and resources to integrate Semaphore with your enterprise content management platforms.
