The Aggressive use of Data for Digital Transformation

Recently I came across a quote that got me thinking - “The aggressive use of data is transforming business models, facilitating new products and services, creating new processes, generating greater utility, and ushering in a new culture of management” - Walter Brenner, Professor of Information Management and Executive Director of the Institute for Computer Science at the University of St. Gallen.

“Aggressive use of data” was the phrase that caught my eye. This is the challenge organizations face as they try to compete in today’s digital economy. How can they use data aggressively to exploit and harness the economic activity that results from billions of everyday online connections among people, businesses, devices, data, and processes?

Aggressive use of data is a challenge we’ve been addressing for a long time at Smartlogic. To aggressively use data organizations must:

  • Have all the data – not just the information stored in applications and data warehouses, but the critical facts extracted from the documents, proposals, emails, contracts, social media streams, blog posts, etc. - the data that makes up more than 80% of the information in the enterprise and that (more importantly) we spend at least 80% of our time interacting with.
  • Harmonize the information to ensure that you can find what’s important despite differences in vocabulary and language usage between organizations – or even different departments of the same organization.
  • Enrich the data with context and meaning – so you know where it was created, by whom and for what purpose – and you have enough information to know how else you can use the data.

Aggressive use of data is not easy – today Smartlogic clients are putting Semaphore to work to derive significant business value. They are extracting critical facts from information assets for analysis, to answer questions they’ve not been able to answer before. They are automating burdensome, costly regulatory compliance processes at lower cost and with higher accuracy. They are managing reference data in a coherent and consistent way across the enterprise. And they are discovering new ways of using
information and deriving insights that move the business forward.

The digital economy is hard. The information is there – but using it aggressively is difficult for most organizations. Semaphore can help.

Best Regards,

Jeremy Bentley, CEO and Founder
