The State of Information

Information comes in many forms and sources. Data held in relational datastores - transactional and warehouse - is relatively easy to process as computers can programmatically handle data operations.

Relatively easy to handle is just that, as all enterprises struggle with data quality caused by multiple applications, databases, transformations, and other processes that are part of today’s siloed organization.

The operational dataset is a small subset of the enterprise data universe. To Reveal Smarter Decisions, organizations need access to the full set of data. However, the enterprise data universe is vast, most information is textual, and often external to the organization (i.e. contracts, research, tweets, emails, etc.).

Incorporating this text-based information into the enterprise is complicated. As it arrives, it is reviewed by a human, who manually reads and marks up the necessary data found in the document and encodes it into a database to join the operational dataset. The source document, which is the source of truth, is then stored in a content management system and further marked-up with keywords, retention and security markers, and other identifying information to control and retrieve the document later.

The issues organizations face with this approach - a broad spectrum of different types of information – ranging from structured data to unstructured content are too numerous to list. The root cause is the same; an insufficient amount of high-quality metadata to govern, calibrate, describe, and harmonize the complexity that makes up the concepts, that are the acts of doing business.

Semaphore enables organizations to automate this metadata mark-up process. Using a collaboration between humans, who have the knowledge, and software, that can apply that knowledge, quickly, cheaply, and consistently across all information sources, renders high-quality data from text, regardless of its location or form - to Reveal Smarter Decisions.

Semaphore deciphers, filters, and connects data – structured and unstructured - making it smarter so you can act faster:

  • Structured data is machine-processable provided the vocabulary and coding across systems, departments, and organizations are consistent. Semaphore knowledge models hold mapping information about disparate data sources to normalize data, eliminate silos, and eliminate data redundancy. Harmonizing information sources allows you to share knowledge across systems to improve data quality and augment existing business applications with semantically defined meanings and relationships that improve the user experience.
  • Unstructured information is not machine-processable. It requires manual processing and mark-up, which is time-consuming and costly. If new or additional information is required, the process must be repeated. Semaphore automates the metadata mark-up process. It uses semantic models and human knowledge to examine each document and apply the relevant metadata in a precise, complete, and consistent manner. If new or additional information is required, the process is as simple as updating the knowledge model and reclassifying the content.

Our semantic approach enables organizations to eliminate data and content silos and empower the business to make key decisions with complete information. Semaphore’s semantic capabilities solve the information management problem faster, cost-effectively, and provide higher quality results than traditional approaches.

Semantic AI Enables Transit Authority to Create a National Data Standard

Cities are the center of economic life. More than half the world’s population lives in cities, it’s where we create ideas, exchange knowledge, and interact and connect – they’re the powerhouse of global economies.

The transportation sector is faced with multiple challenges. How the future unfolds depends on the technologies and services consumers and businesses embrace and how policymakers respond.

Transportation authorities must:

  • Sharply curb greenhouse gas emissions to slow the rate of climate change
  • Serve a growing population and cope with worsening highway congestion
  • Maintain and upgrade assets such as roads, bridges, ports, waterways, airports, and public transit and determine how to pay for improvements
  • Adapt to shifts in trade, energy, and funding sources that affect all modes of transportation

Read how one transport agency leveraged the power of Semaphore to develop a data standard that delivers a mature and consistent infrastructure to drive informed transportation asset investment decisions.

Product Announcements

Look for Semaphore 5.2 in the New Year

Semaphore 5.2 will be available in the New Year with updates, bug fixes, and security and performance improvements. Publisher permissions will be set at the environment and model level and models can now be cloned for versioning purposes. An intuitive Knowledge Review Tool (KRT) with a redesigned workflow will improve the process for accepting changes to the model. 5.2 will sport a new translation side panel to aid the population of multi-language models and Document Analyzer changes will allow improved viewing of document evidence.
